“living library of becomings” is an ongoing research and performative library project dedicated to multiple narrations of intersectional, decolonial, queer feminist spirits, with an attempt to create a platform in which such voices and texts are shared in tactile and performative ways. It gathers and shares textual materials, ranging from must-read literature, and scholarly papers, to artistic contributions – zines, speculative fiction, and audio pieces – in various forms and languages.

The project asks: How can intersectional feminist spirits be shared as a living library while embracing the physical bodily experiences with textual materials? How can the method of library-making as an archival practice be performative to challenge the canonical systematisation, categorisation and languages?

It seeks alternative modes of knowing as a communal and collective practice that resists the ongoing colonial system of knowledge production to explore a platform as a decentralised platform as well as a portal space, connecting the past to the present to the future of and trans-geopolitical endeavours.

This platform tests out a collaborative mode and invites everyone to submit or suggest a text or any other material that is meaningful in this context. We will happily add and make it accessible on the desktop. Feel free to write to us the specific content by ︎ email.

Versed in the Void

By Josephine Baan, in collaboration with Amos Cappuccio︎listen to “Versed in the Void”

Versed in the Void first emerged as a performance in the Turin spring of 2019, where it was developed in conversation with Amos Cappuccio and Chiara Cecconello over the tight span of two weeks. We hadn’t met before we started rehearsing the piece, yet from our spontaneous and delicate assembly ensued a collaboration that was as intense as it was meaningful, a dialogue that is ongoing until this day.

Versed in the Void articulates the complexities of collectivity, navigating the individual within the whole and attempting to formulate solidarity across difference. The void here refers to the inconceivability of the future as well as the space between any two subjectivities. These notions take on an added layer of meaning in light of today, where a radically altered present coupled with enforced social distancing continues to widen the gap between ‘us’ and ‘them.’

Initially, in light of the exhibition inter:archive, Amos and I had begun taking gentle steps towards developing a new piece together. When the exhibition was forced to convert from physical to digital space, we decided to rework the audio track of Versed in the Void instead, giving voice to its renewed sense of urgency. What had meant to set the stage for a new work has now become a re-articulation of existing words, tasting each syllable anew as they are spoken out loud. Physical gestures of revolt and unification that were originally performed are audible in the track, and through a set of image-instructions you are invited to perform them from your own home.

In the run up to inter:archive, before any of us went on lockdown, many of our conversations revolved around questions of collective mobilisation, and how to develop networks of solidarity that reshape the ways in which we live and work together for the long term. These past few weeks have prompted a great number of initiatives and grassroots organisations to spring up in response to the increased precarity of these times. We wanted to list several of these mutual aid initiatives here, to learn from and engage in collective practices within our direct environments.

*script partially translated from Italian
Occasionally a train sets off along the seafront and on that train there's me, leaving. Because I don't want to stay in my sleepy, cabbage-patch village, puzzling out the licence plates of out-of-town cars like a kid down from the mountains sitting on the wall of a bridge. I'm off, bye bye village.

In the world, beyond my village, there are other towns, some on the sea, others, why I don't know, lost in the depths of the lowlands, on the banks of railways that arrive, how I don't know, after breathless journeys through endless stretches of countryside. Every so often I get off in one of these towns and I always have the look of the first-time traveller, pockets stuffed with newspapers, eyes smarting with dust.

At night in my new bed I turn off the light and listen to the trams, then think of my room in my village, so distant in the night it seems impossible that two places so far apart could exist at the same moment. And, where I'm not sure, I fall asleep.

I wake up and look at the clock. Realising the time, I fall back into my pillow and allow my vision to blur in the dark soup of shadows and speculations. There is clamour inside and out, a burning question less like language and more like the demanding absence of a missing organ. Time to let go, bye bye, organ.

Why anything? And if anything, what? Soon, I get bored with my thoughts and I hold my own hand for comfort, petting and stroking until I no longer know who is touching who. The stroke becomes a wave, why I don’t know, and the wave becomes a particle, how I don’t know, and I lie still, waiting for the sun to rise, as seems the commonsensical thing to do.

There, in the dark, I can hear fish breathing in the not-far-off sea. I can hear blue-fingered leaves leafing through history, and a dog whispering in the distant echo. I answer the dog:

Or the dog answers me

I want to quit smoking but I don’t. I refuse with one hand, and accept with the other. Comfortably neither here nor there, I reject the present as a void, as a time of transition between past and future.

The now is allegorical, a black hole; swallowing and swelling. Leaving only a dense volume of emptiness, all light and matter is returned to its origin. There is nothing new here. Bye bye, future.

Death was easier to imagine as a child, and more glamorous. My eyes dart around the dim room and its vague outlines of stock furniture which I recognize from IKEA catalogues.Morning is late today. I get out of bed. I rub my eyes. I see a ring, hanging above me. It quivers and hangs in a loop of light.
I see a drop of water, swarming with life.
I see a house, and the body of the house itself.
I see the house of my body, the house I’ll not leave for as long as I live.

Look at the low sky, pressing down its weight.

There’s a hole in the ground, the size of an armchair.

See how the given is given,

and that it matters who gives,

and why.

I hear something stamping, a great beast’s foot is chained. It stamps,

and stamps,

and stamps.

Old newspapers have gathered in a corner.

There is a finger pointing.

Those are the bodies that matter.

Those are the bodies that don’t.

I hear a voice, breaking.

I don’t mean to sound clever…

…but…

…anything preceding a ‘but’ is untrue

White-tipped fingers fondle darkness, probing the wound.

The back of my hand burns, but the palm is clammy and damp with dew.

Suddenly a bee booms in my ear,

it is here;

it is past.

I met the day before the light went.

When the smoke rises, sleep curls off the roof like a mist.

It is important to speak loudly

To think loudly and clearly

To make the crops grow

To make the seasons turn

Stones are cold to my feet, I feel each one, round or pointed, separately.

That is the first stroke of the church bell, then the others follow;

one,

two,

one,

due,

una,

two,

yes,

no,

yes,

yes,

yes,

no,

maybe

not really

light,

dark,

light,

twilight

dusk

clair de lune

The stamp is getting louder.

I burn, I shiver, out of this sun, into this shadow.

Now watch how it falls apart in public.

Listen as words fall from my mouth. Gliding
over my lips, piling one atop the other into a heap on the floor, like dew
drops on a leaf. Listen to my tongue, licking the insides of my mouth. Gently
spasming against my palate. Hear the waves of my voice echo, my hollow body
becoming spatial, becoming large, becoming colossal, meeting the surface of
your porous skin, vibrating your eardrums, entering you. Your body embodies
mine. It is words, and it is words and it is always words and one, two, three,
words become flesh.
I pull the glove over my knuckles, the firm
leather glove, pull it tightly over my knuckles, flexing and clenching, and
flexing and clenching the fingers again, feeling my skin and that of another
tighten around my balled fist.

Facts are dangerous because sometimes they
obscure the truth. We wanted more. It never came. We wanted everything. But
what is longing if not for that which will never come, never be? Never wanting
less, but always wanting what isn’t there. Certainty. Clarity. Agency over our
own bodies. Faith in any kind of future.&nbsp; Our inability to conceive a world
without boundaries, our inability to imagine infinity, this is our basic
illness.

You could say that we are living in a time

What would you say if I said that we are
living in a time that is characterized by a pervasive sense of lack
absence emptiness nothing nulla loss want?&nbsp; There’s a sense of something
missing. Do you feel it? This nagging void? A lack so rife that even abundance
appears empty.
I am exaggerating. But also, I am not. Days hang suspended,
potent with collapse.
Look around you, it is already happening.
Who can say
whether the sun will rise tomorrow? Who can say they belong to this porous
ensemble? Who can say what parts of the story remain untold?

(Archive Books, 2018)

The publication that includes the English translation of the script of the performance, that was meant to be read and reactivated as part of inter:archive, got stuck in a storage in Milan because of a new lung disease. Three weeks of male-streaming and broadcasting later. The public discussion around who keeps our society clean seems to be actualised, by the realities around care taking and the racial implications of a clean and hygienic society. The connection between the maintenance of white narratives in general and what is expected from those working in the care sectors on an individual level, becomes shockingly visible those days, with all its gendered and racialized implications. Tales of superiority and invulnerability get contrasted by the call for care/repair workers, that restore and absorb the damages of the politics that those delusions brought along in the past decades.

The digital space, that has replaced almost all other possible spaces of encounter – beyond the nuclear family or the monogamous relationship – structurally and schematically repeats, what I thought has for ever been banned in that museum in the Ticino: the unbroken figures of the surveying philosopher, the knowledgeable expert, the savant doctor, the determined and aspiring forces, arranged around the belligerent leader. The caring, judging and desperate female figures in the side rooms.

How to build a separatist online life, in order to be able to hear the silences and to keep working on a society in which the common value systems do encourage appearances beyond the positivistic logic of a patriarchal and whitening space, which the internet and the social media have shown to be in the past four weeks more clearly than ever.

The un-friend, un-follow buttons have gotten a completely new meaning. As well as queer and fem online groups, telegram groups, closed mailing lists; the organizing along the poorest and most vulnerable ones; the (embodied) knowledges of grannies, care workers, maintainance workers, sex workers, in all their presence-absences; the scholars and educators that refer to modern genealogies of figures of knowledge around plants and healing, that have been subterraneated during the witch hunts, of spirits and bonds, that colonialism tried to dis-legitimate; the new waves of feminist curating and publishing.

Abstract of:
Recollections of Touch
in times of mass physical distancing
by Tina Reden

<img width="2880" height="1800" width_o="2880" height_o="1800" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f10ac8596bff7eff224c12359673d68071dc30844bdc0b8529bae99b5d2d8c85/Recollections-of-Touch_Tina-Reden.jpg" data-mid="67332672" border="0" data-scale="80" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f10ac8596bff7eff224c12359673d68071dc30844bdc0b8529bae99b5d2d8c85/Recollections-of-Touch_Tina-Reden.jpg" />

Iyanda

I need to talk to you Iara. Something strange happened to me over the past year.

Iara

What’s wrong?

Iyanda

I can’t experience touch anymore. When someone touches me, I don’t feel it anymore. In the beginning I was not sure if it was really something or maybe just a lack of iron or so. But I checked everything and I’m fine. I just don’t... feel anymore.

Iara

What? That’s so weird. Like when I touch your arm like this?

Iyanda

Nothing. I also feel very cold towards everything and everybody at the moment.

I just don’t know what to do. I just know, doctors won’t be able to help me with that.

Iara

I have an idea. But it might feel a bit weird. Remember how my mom always does her little meditation thing when she’s worried about something or indecisive? When she goes into her room and closes the door and starts to talk on her own?

Iyanda

Yes, when she’s calling your nana in the universe she says.

Iara

Exactly. When she’s calling our ancestors.

This is a dialogue between Iyanda and her sisters, her mothers, her ancestors and friends. A collage, an intimate dialogue between different voices, women, generations, bodies and emotions and recollection of touch.

Iyanda turned to her ancestors the moment she realised that something very strange was happening to her and her body. Iyanda had lost her capacity to experience touch. Slowly, first almost unnoticeable her skin went from very sensitive, to slightly dazed to completely numb. It seemed like her skin had grown a whole new layer around her body, that was not connected to her anymore. But not only did she lose physical connection to her surroundings. Her emotional and social bonds seemed to become more and more alien and indifferent to her. Not being able to experience touch anymore had changed her perception of her surroundings and influenced her being in the world.

Inspired by a variety of feminist theories such as Sara Ahmed and Jackie Stacys Thinking Through The Skin, Audre Lordes Uses of the Erotic or Astrida Neimanis Bodies of Water touch - seen as a potentiality within this liminal space between the margins of one body and the beginning of another - will here be explored as a relational practice, as knowledge and memory that travels from body to body - human and non human - and beyond. Touch, as something plural, varied in tone and texture and therefore referring to an interactive and changing moment that is perpetually generating new meanings and feelings that can then be read differently in different contexts.

Iyanda

Hello? I am Iyanda. I am calling you because I need help. I am not sure how that works though. I hear my aunty Zora calling you sometimes, so I thought I might try it also. How should I start? I am Iyanda and I have become numb to touch. I don’t feel any handshake anymore, the fluffy fur of my cat or a caress on my back. I know what I’m supposed to feel, but I’m numb. When I am walking down the streets and see my hand gliding along the bushes - I’m numb. When a lover kisses my neck and I hear the breath so close it could be mine - I’m numb. Hello?

Them

Iyanda,

we are here.

Tina Reden is an interdisciplinary artist, activist and Dj living in Zurich and Amsterdam. Her work is collaborative, performative and dialogic and explores the political possibilities within the active position of listening – both as a metaphor and as a concrete, sound-specific practice. She uses notions of rhythms, polyphony or cacophony as a way to listen to multiplicity and undo the modern notion of a singular narrative. She explores different formats such as sound improvisations, poetic soundscapes or storytellings as possible places for feminist, decolonial and mindful practices – always trying to integrate discursive situations and initiate moments of being together.

“It was an aptly chosen name, as illustrated by her speech, in which she at once refutes the prevailing myth that women are weaker than men while challenging social definitions of womanhood—which relies upon ideas about white women’s femininity and purity.

Truth says:

“That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me!”

Truth criticizes her feminist contemporaries for focusing on the lived experiences of white women. Then she takes aim at the abolitionist movement for solely focusing on the rights of black men:

“Then that little man in black there, he says women can’t have as much rights as men, ‘ cause Christ wasn’t a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him.”

The speech was particularly poignant as it was delivered at a time, as historian Nell Painter puts it, “when most Americans thought of slaves as male and women as white.” Truth “embodied a fact that still bears repeating: Among blacks are women; among the women, there are blacks.”

We Demand!
Research on the&nbsp;«Manifest ausländischer Frauen» from 1975
by Vera Ryser and Sally Schonfeldt

Emigrazione Italiana, 28. Jg. Nr. 36 (Sept. 1975), Sozialarchiv Zürich

In February 1975 180 women of different nationalities wrote the “Manifesto of foreign women“. The women demanded progressive civil, political and social rights and fought publicly for better working conditions and for their recognition within Swiss society. The manifesto was written in 1975 within the framework of the conference “Problems of foreign women workers and wives of foreign workers“ at the Paulus Academy in Zurich. At the two-day meeting the women came together and in small groups and plenary sessions discussed the triple discrimination of their position as women, as migrants and as workers. At the end of the conference a smaller editorial group wrote the Manifesto, which included both the problems experienced and described by the women, as well as demands and solutions. The manifesto represents a comprehensive compilation of the conditions and lives of women immigrants at that time and demanded for example equal pay, right to political participation, a revision of the existing provisions relating to maternity protection, more flexible working hours for men and women with children and the abolition of seasonal worker status. The women sent the manifesto to unions, religious organizations, women‘s associations and political parties in Switzerland and invited them in November 1975 to a second conference, which was advertised under the slogan “Opinions on the Manifesto of foreign women“. Although some opinions from the Church, women‘s organizations and trade unions were positive the manifesto was generally felt to be too demanding, too emotionally charged, polemical, excessive, untrue and not objective enough. For a brief moment the women succeeded in gaining attention for their political demands however their efforts and demands were soon forgotten and had no immediate political consequences.
Today forty years have passed since the manifesto was written and yet many of the demands are still not a reality, in spite of them being even more relevant in the present time. Especially within the context of the on-going public debate on migration in Switzerland it seems pertinent to ask the authors of this manifesto about their work experience and political participation over the last forty years. What has the manifesto achieved and what has it not? Which of the manifesto’s demands do they consider as having been realised already and which are still relevant to today? How has the situation of migrant women and women in general within Swiss society changed over these forty years? And what meaning did the writing of the manifesto have for their personal and political contemplations? Confrontation with these issues is extremely important for Swiss historical conscious-ness as both migrants and women are too often undervalued within it.
The “Manifesto of foreign women“ was investigated historically for the first time in a chapter of the recently published book by Sarah Baumann “... and the women also came...“1 and examined through sources from the Colonie Libere and the Contact Centre for Italians and Foreigners. The exhibition project We Demand! by Vera Ryser and Sally Schonfeldt, which took place in Les Complices* in Zurich in June and July 2016, was based on this research, however it placed the women’s stories in the foreground, which were shown in seven narrative interviews with women who participated in the manifesto. The exhibition thus provided a space that enabled a focused review of a forgotten event and at the same time asked how and by whom our contemporary history was constructed. The interviews allow a deeper understanding of the experiences of politically active immigrants and Swiss women in the 1970s, which until very recently have only been selectively and academically examined. The interviews with these progressive women critically examine the development of Swiss migration history and politics over the last forty years as well as examining the historical and contemporary role of the voices of migrant women and women in Switzerland. It is time that this manifesto gains a wide audience and the attention it deserves forty years after its first publication.

Sally Schonfeldt is an artist who lives and works in Zurich. She investigates in her works how knowledge is produced and established. She questions who wields power over determining history and memory. By using historiography to question methods of knowledge production in relation to anti-colonial discourses and the position of women in history she repeatedly challenges Eurocentric historiographies. Her works seek to generate alternative possibilities of interacting with history and contribute to the construction of new narratives in juxtaposition to those enshrined within the Eurocentric canon.

Vera Ryser is an artist and researcher who lives and works in Zurich. In her artistic research, she deals with historical and socio-political processes and strives to update these topics beyond the supposedly clear boundaries of practice and theory. Her search for representations of an aesthetic production of knowledge is characterized by collaborations with researchers, artists and experts.
